Grey’s Anatomy season 18 will mark a new era for Dr Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington). Following the abrupt exit of her husband Alex (Justin Chambers) – not to mention the trauma caused by treating patients during the pandemic – Jo has made some major changes.

Now she is a single mother and an OB / GYN resident. But what about his friendship with Link (Chris Carmack)? Is it possible that the upcoming season will see Jo and Link leave the Friends Zone?

Jo adopted a baby in the season 17 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy”

Amidst the chaos of the pandemic in Gray Sloan in Season 17, Jo met little baby Luna. The baby lost its mother due to complications, and Jo fell in love with the newborn baby while caring for her. At the end of the season, Jo decided she wanted to adopt Luna. But his candidacy was initially rejected.

Jo wasn’t done fighting for Luna, however. The Season 17 finale began in August 2020, when Jo planned to sell her shares in Gray Sloan so she could hire a good lawyer and get custody. As the finale moved through the final months of 2020 and headed into the New Year, it was revealed that Jo’s plan was working.

Jackson Avery moves in, Jo Wilson moves in

At the end of last season, fans learned that Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) had left for Boston and that Jo had moved into her old accommodation. She also had Luna at home with her, and that’s when Link arrived.

Link and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) had apparently separated after his marriage proposal failed. After the rejection, Link went straight to Jo’s new penthouse in search of a place to stay.

After Amelia said no to Link’s proposal “in front of three children with several rings on a beach”, Grey’s Anatomy Executive producer Meg Marinis says they won’t skip “any kind of conversation” about what Link thinks about it.

“They’re going to have to find out,” Marinis said. TV line. “Because they still have a lot of love for each other. But he’s also very, very hurt.

At the same time, Marinis says that Jo’s new life as a working single mom and OB / GYN resident is “chaos.” But the EP promises that Link will “definitely” be there for her every step of the way. Does that mean they’ll finally get out of the friend zone?

She never knew a love like Luna

Marinis says that in season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy they will explore “the madness of what it is like to be a working single mom”.

“She’s like any new mom who works – she’s trying to figure it out,” Marinis teases. “She doesn’t want to take a step back from her career, but she loves this baby, and I don’t think she’s ever known love like what she feels towards Luna. So she’s going to have to find a way. to make everything work.

Marinis promises that “there will be comedy and heartbreak in this situation,” and Link will be there to help. He’s also a parent of a small child, but he doesn’t struggle with his ability to be a dad and take care of his son.

“So it’s kind of the perfect time for him to be there and help Jo, because it’s a place where he’s not lost,” says Marinis.

The executive producer says that Grey’s Anatomy fans have seen Link “100% there for Jo” in the past. And in season 18, they’ll see her “be that person for him.” She will be “his best friend and help him get through this situation” with Amelia. But that’s no guarantee that Jo and Link’s relationship will come out of the friends zone.

“They’re both so focused on their kids, and he’s still getting out of this affair with Amelia – they haven’t even really ended it,” Marinis notes. “It’s just that she said no to his proposal. So I think this story is not over yet. What was so nice about this friendship [between Link and Jo] it’s that we’ve never really shown the danger of being under pressure to be more than just friends.

Marinis added that fans will learn more about their friendship from the past. And at the start of Season 18, fans will see them “being there for each other on both sides.”

Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 premieres Thursday, September 30 on ABC.
