Every season of Grey’s Anatomy ranked from worst to best

There’s a lot going on in Season 16 of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ but what most viewers are likely to associate with it is the mishandled departure of original series Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), who skips at the MIA in the middle of the season only see you later. bids an abrupt farewell to his wife, friends and co-workers via several letters from Dear John. Although fans learned in early 2020 that Chambers had left the show, the possibility still remained open for Alex to receive a meaningful send-off, similar to Sandra Oh’s exit from the show at the end of season 10. Instead of that, in what looked like a huge out-of-character move, Alex’s letters revealed that he had reunited with his ex-wife Izzie (Katherine Heigl, who left in Season 6), who had given birth to his children without his knowledge years before. Coming on the heels of Alex becoming chief of surgery at Pacific Northwest Hospital and reaffirming his wedding vows to Jo, nothing about the start seemed right, casting a pall over the season.

And sadly, there wasn’t much else in the season to redeem it. Also in Season 16, Meredith’s medical license comes under fire due to insurance fraud, Andrew DeLuca experiences a mental health crisis, Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) cheats on Owen, and Amelia becomes pregnant. Also, for much of the season, Richard resents Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) for firing him, creating hostility between two characters whose supportive relationship has always been part of the foundation of the show. All in all, it just wasn’t a very enjoyable season, made worse by the disconcerting exit of one of the show’s most beloved characters.
