Lizzie Deignan expressed her frustration with the lack of communication and technique of her Trek-Segafredo team during their victorious performance in the team time trial of stage 1 of the Giro d’Italia Donne.
Their performance placed American Ruth Winder in the first leader’s jersey for the 10-day race, but Deignan said they had areas for improvement regarding the team time trial.
“We won the race but we didn’t have the best technical performance,” Deignan said after the Cuneo stage.
“I was at the limit and in those times you have to try to communicate if there is a problem. There was a point on the line where there was a drastic change in speed and I was trying to communicate. with the car but they were getting the wrong message so I was frustrated, “she said.
The Giro d’Italia Donne started on Friday with a 26.7km team time trial that started in Fossano and ended in Cuneo. Trek-Segafredo covered the road in a winning time of 33:40, beating SD Worx by eight seconds and Ale BTC Ljubljana by 40 seconds.
Winder was the first Trek-Segafredo rider to cross the line and won the first maglia rosa of the event, followed by Ellen van Dijk, Elisa Longo Borghini and the Deignan.
While the team time trial discipline was a fairly regular addition to the high performance women’s calendar until a few years ago, the event ended as a team discipline at the World Championships in 2018, switching to a mixed relay format in 2019.
There is also the Postnord UCI WWT VÃ¥rgÃ¥rda WestSweden TTT, however, it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. Apart from a stage of the Giro d’Italia Donne, the event has become somewhat rare on the calendar for a year or two.
“In the end, the main thing is that we had a very good performance,” said Deignan. âMaybe, technically it wasn’t the best, but strong. I think you can see on the camera that I was really the fourth woman, and I survived and we won, so I’m happy. . “
The Giro d’Italia Donne continues on Saturday with the 100.1 km race from stage 2 from Boves to the first finish at the top of Prato Nevoso.
