‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Abigail Spencer Reflects on ‘Hardest Year’ That ‘Almost Killed Her’

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ actress Abigail Spencer celebrated another year around the sun and commemorated her big day by opening her heart wide.

In an open letter shared on his Instagram page, the Los Angeles-based actor and florist shared a series of photographs alongside her son Roman and model trainer J. Alexander. The actor also reflected on turning 41 and what the past year has taught him in terms of sanity and strength.

“I don’t often come here to share personal stories of what’s really going on in my life. I use this space more as a visual aid. A trip, a style, a job, a party, a sparkle, flowers , art, docu-series friendships if you will,” she explained in the post, which was shared to her Instagram page on Thursday.

She then shared that she felt the need to open up to fans on her 41st birthday.

“It’s my birthday. I feel compelled to share a little more with you reflecting on the past year as I set my intentions and vision for the next,” she wrote. “Last year on my 40th birthday I mentioned that I went to Onsite, an emotional wellness retreat, for a week of intensive trauma therapy to look at myself more deeply. Get more healing and more tools to dance with the fullness of life. They say it’s the equivalent of 100 hours of therapy a week. This week has been radical and life changing. I entered my 40th year in feeling better than ever. Like I plugged my tailbone into the sun. Ready to take life no matter what. And boy did it.”

“On August 4, 2021, I entered the toughest year of my life. It nearly killed me, what if I hadn’t had training for my mind, body, and spirit and I hadn’t I surrounded myself with the most incredible community of friends and healers, I don’t believe I would have survived it,” she explained. “I won’t go into the details of the events that caused what I’m about to share, but I will tell you some of the emotional headlines of its effects.”

According E ! NewIn comments added to her post, Abigail described how she dealt with various mental health issues that ultimately manifested into physical side effects.

“The stress almost knocked me out. I literally felt like my insides were being eaten away by stress. I couldn’t get up off the floor on some days. Fear and loss gripped me. Anxiety would stop me. In the fight of my life… Everything was so hard,” she wrote. I couldn’t leave the house for days. I couldn’t breathe (sic). Everything was so difficult. At one point I thought I was having a heart attack. I spoke to a cardiologist and he said I didn’t have a heart attack, my heart was so broken and I needed to be restrained.

Fans and friends of the actor flooded the comments of his personal story with a slew of heart and smile emojis.

J. Alexander commented with wishes and praise.

“Thank you for sharing your truth. Enjoy your birthday,” he replied to her post.

“Reading and crying, you’ve been through so much, you’re strong, you’re loved,” one fan wrote with more words of encouragement. “I wish you never had this terrible year of your life, but you put your head above water, and you can put your crown back on your head. You. Queen.”
