The PARTY spirit was at the rendezvous for the Let’s Rock The North East festival in Herrington Park, Sunderland on Saturday.
There was a distinct 1980s theme to the acts, with original performers taking the stage to delight fans.
The weather for the day started wet, gray and miserable, but people started to fill the park and shortly after 10:30 am it was quite full.
The rain stopped around 1:30 p.m., and the afternoon remained dry but gray and cloudy.
The crowd was in a festive spirit, with costumes and a lot of fun.
There were fairground attractions and plenty of hot food stalls. Well organized and with good security there were very few problems in the crowd and everyone seemed very jovial and happy.
A music fan summed it up by concluding: “It was a rainy day, but everyone came home with smiles on their faces.”
The Human League was the lead actor, performing a selection of their most famous hits including Don’t You Want Me, (Keep Feeling) Fascination, Mirror Man, Open Your Heart and Together in Electric Dreams (although made from a solo track by singer Phil Oakey).
OMD – the initials generally became the best-known name of the band Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark – and animated frontman Andy McCluskey and animated frontman Andy McClusley kept the crowds entertained with their electronic set.
Their most popular songs include Enola Gay, If You Leave, Joan of Arc, Maid of Orleans, Tesla Girls, Locomotion, and Sailing on the Seven Seas.
ABC were another act formed in Sheffield in 1980. Martin Fry, lead singer, was the only consistent member of the group. They reached ten top 40 in the UK and their famous album The Lexicon of Love went to number one.
Howard jones – Another 1980s synth-pop hero Jones managed to hit ten top 40 hits, six of which were top ten. He was well known not only for his keyboard skills but also for his famous hairstyles.
Sister sled – In 1971, these four sisters from Philadelphia became a band, and during the disco era, had a series of hits such as We are Family, Lost in Music and Frankie.
Midge Ure Electronics – Midge has been involved in Ultravox, Thin Lizzy, Visage, Rich Kids and Slik. He also co-wrote and produced the charity single Do They Know its Christmas? With his band Electronica, he focuses on his synth eras – mainly Ultravox, but also Visage. Hits include Vienna, Fade to Gray, Yellow Pearl (TOTP theme), If I was and Dancing with Tears in my Eyes.
Go west – A pop due with a string of hits like We Close Our Eyes, Call Me, Faithful and King of Wishful Thinking.
Toya – Actor, musician and singer – a multi-talented lady of striking appearance. Eight Top 40 hits include It’s a Mystery, Thunder in the Mountains, and I Want to be Free.
Other artists Performances include Jaki Graham, Pete Wyle, Fiction Factory, Peter Coyle, Lotus Eaters, Brother Beyond, Modern Romance, and Black Lace’s Conga Party.
