Police were called to the Spring Lake Estates neighborhood in Callahan at around 7.15 am Leeper said when deputies arrived the suspected gunman was lying in the driveway of the residence unarmed.
The sheriff said the suspect, whom he identified as William Conway Broyles, 57, called 911 after the shooting to inform the sheriff’s office of the shooting.
“Later he told us he shot each victim several times, just to make sure they weren’t in pain,” Leeper said.
According to Leeper, Broyles’ wife, 57, was gunned down in the living room of the house, her 27-year-old daughter was gunned down as she woke up and her 28-year-old son was gunned down in a bedroom. .
âWhen asked why he didn’t just shoot himself, he said he was too scared to do it,â the sheriff said.
Broyles was incarcerated in the Nassau County Jail on three counts of second degree murder, Leeper said. He noted no history of domestic problems at the address.
The house, surrounded by crime scene tapes, already had Christmas decorations on the windows.
“It’s very sad. For our neighborhood, for our community, for this family. This time of year especially,” said a neighbor who asked not to be identified.
Several callers reported a heavy law enforcement presence in the neighborhood to News4JAX. A crime scene tape was visible and several roads in the neighborhood were completely blocked.
Neighbors said it was heartbreaking for their neighborhood. A woman said she was taking her children to school on Wednesday morning when she noticed law enforcement filling the street.
âIt makes me reflect on the times we live in now, and we all need to come together and support each other,â said Carol Conrique.
Neighbors said Wednesday’s tragedy brought back bad memories. Almost two years ago, a West Nassau High School football player named Trent Fort was shot and killed in the same neighborhood.
Neighbors said they were praying for those affected by Wednesday’s shooting.
âI hope and pray for the best for this family and everyone who knows them because something terrible has happened,â said Conrique.
