Grey’s Anatomy will continue to bring back popular characters in Season 18, hinting that it could be the show’s final season.
Grey’s Anatomy is gearing up for its 18th season, and the return of many characters who have been absent for years could herald the end of the series. Medical dramas continue to be very popular with the public, and the one that has dominated this field for years is Grey’s Anatomy. Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy premiered on ABC in 2005 as a mid-season replacement, but it was so well received that it has lasted over 15 seasons and continues to be unstoppable. The show became the longest-running scripted prime-time series on ABC, and although its quality has declined over the years, it still has a strong fan base.
Grey’s Anatomy follows the basic premise of medical dramas, focusing on the lives of surgical interns, residents and assistants as they do their best to juggle their professional and personal lives, which often overlap and give way to many tragedies inside and outside the hospital. The series is directed by Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo), who viewers have seen go from an intern to chief of general surgery at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital. Through her, audiences met a variety of characters over the 17 seasons, most of whom left the show for different reasons, but even those who were killed at one point returned in season 17 in Dreams of Meredith when she was battling COVID. Grey’s Anatomy will continue to bring back characters in Season 18, hinting that it could be the show’s final season.
Meredith’s dreams brought back fan favorite characters Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), George O’Malley (TR Knight), Lexie Gray (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), with Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) also showing after his death earlier in Season 17 after being stabbed. Now, Grey’s Anatomy is confirmed to continue with an 18th season, and a few returning characters have already been revealed, and these include both characters who are already dead (like everyone who joined Meredith at the beach) and some who are still alive and left Seattle Grace several seasons ago. Between all of Meredith’s relatives at the beach in season 17 and those returning in season 18, Grey’s Anatomy could prepare the audience for a very moving goodbye.
The characters have confirmed their return in Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 so far are Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) and Ellis Gray (Kate Burton), Meredith’s mother. Addison made her first appearance in Grey’s Anatomyy season 1 and left in season 8, but continued to star in the spinoff series Private practice; Megan Hunt is the sister of Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) who disappeared for ten years and was treated in Gray Sloan after being rescued because she had a massive abdominal injury, and once healed she moved to Los Angeles. ; Ellis Gray was Meredith’s abusive mother and famous surgeon, who also had an affair with Richard Webber, and she passed away in season 3, although she continued to appear sporadically throughout the rest of the series. It’s not uncommon for TV shows to bring back popular characters for their final seasons as a way to say goodbye to their audiences, and that’s exactly what Seasons 17 and 18 do, with the most notable returns being those of Derek, George, and Ellis, with the latter perhaps returning to give Meredith a final piece of advice or words of encouragement, as her career could take a turn if the series ends with season 18.
At the end of Grey’s Anatomy season 17, Meredith was recovering from COVID and became the Residency Program Director as there’s a chance she won’t be able to operate anymore, so the show could pave the way for Meredith to leave Gray Sloan and move on to different things, to both professionally and personally, and the returning characters are a treat for viewers and also a quick and painless way to fully close their arcs, as not all of them were resolved correctly. There is no official word on what will happen with it Grey’s Anatomy after season 18, but it wouldn’t be surprising if this turned out to be the final season.
