Goodbyes are never final Grey’s Anatomy and the news that Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew are set to reprise their roles as Jackson Avery and April Kepner in the Season 18 finale has fans thrilled and excited. Besides having a great love story, the characters portrayed by the two are considered some of the most skilled doctors on the show.
Eighteen years is a long time, and during that time, the ABC medical drama has featured plenty of other incredible doctors. Many of them have been great characters overall, with interesting love lives and drama-filled moments. But which doctors should patients really trust with their lives? Editors have their say.
The former head of fetal surgery is considered one of the friendliest Grey’s Anatomy characters ever. You know_Pause feels there’s no one better than her, writing “She’s so good with her patients, from premature babies and kids to teens and moms.” They add, “Karev has improved a lot after Arizona started teaching him.”
Being good at your job means being able to do something others can’t and the fact that patients fly in from all over the country just so Arizona can take care of them says a lot about her abilities. . Moreover, she is one of the few characters whose reputation was already high before her appearance in the series. When Bailey prepares to work with Arizona for the first time, Richard tells her “She’s the best anyone’s seen in a long time.” Richard’s words are to be believed since no one spot talent better than him.
GreySocializer states that Derek is one of the best because “he was a world famous neurosurgeon and the government/president practically begged him to take him on at one point”. During his time on the show, Derek is chief of neurosurgery as well as a member of the board of trustees at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital.
In the show, the Brain Mapping Initiative is meant to be an important part of the president’s legacy. His choice therefore proves that Derek is the true medical superstar. And the president doesn’t just ask, he begs. Other people also place great trust in the neurosurgeon because he is known to take on delicate cases that no one else will touch. Further proof of Derek’s genius can be found in his 2 clinical trials: one involving injecting a live virus into a tumor and the other involving the cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
ParkOk7246 roots for Callie, reminding everyone that “she made human bones out of thin air when she was just a resident.” They add that “every participant wanted to work with her and not with the chief of traumatology”. In the medical drama, Callie serves as the chief of orthopedic surgery before moving to New York.
The Redditor is fully aware of Callie’s abilities. Creating hands and legs from scratch makes her a magician. The story also shows that she was a top doctor right from the start. In the internal exam, she was the top scorer and took over as head of Otho’s department when she was only a resident.
Editor clovrdose says Cristina “was a natural, taken very quickly, good under pressure, and a plethora of other things.” The “cardio god” is certainly one of the Grey’s Anatomy character fans wish to return. She spent a few years in Seattle before moving to Switzerland to become director of cardiothoracic surgery at the Klausman Institute for Medical Research.
Cristina’s history of impressive exploits is long. She’s done it all, from successfully operating with a gun pointed at her (which might freak out most surgeons) to performing Burke’s surgeries when she was only in his 2nd year. What’s even more impressive is that no one could tell the difference. She is also the only doctor to have been literally disputed. During his final year of residency, several hospitals approached him with gift baskets, hoping to have him on their payroll.
The co-head of cardiothoracic surgery also has many admirers. Editor yellow chaitea notes, “she is a fantastic doctor in both cardio and trauma, can be calm under pressure, has good bedside manners, and knows when to push her residents and when to take charge.”
The best in their profession know how to pass on their knowledge to others. and the former chief officer of MEDCOM proves what an excellent tutor she is during her time with Cristina. She’s so good that Cristina chooses to trade Owen for longer under Teddy. The heart surgeon also had her own groundbreaking accomplishments, including pioneering cellular regenerative heart medicine.
Maggie – the current Co-Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery – has also done a lot and her efforts have not gone unnoticed. Siiyalater99 reminds everyone that “It’s been said over and over again what a genius Maggie is…how she graduated years early and how she’s the youngest head of cardio and all her accomplishments.”
You don’t become a cardio chief by being average and the fact that Maggie did it very early in her career speaks volumes about her genius. Due to her unique abilities, Gray Sloan is forced to share her as well. Currently, she has privileges at both Pacific Northwest General Hospital and Seattle Presbyterian Hospital, making her the only surgeon allowed to enter the operating room of Seattle’s 3 major hospitals.
Owen began his career as a military doctor before moving to Seattle. MissSharpee says the trauma manager is “the best under pressure and good at improvisation”.
The improv part is mostly what Owen is known for, even once he managed to use a ballpoint pen during surgery. His stamina is also unmatched as he has already worked for 3 days in a row without rest. Owen is good at making sure others are doing a great job too. Shortly after taking over Seattle Grace Hospital’s trauma department, he was able to turn it into a level one center.
Addison Forbes Montgomery
Addison is one of the few dual-certified OB/GYNs specializing in maternal-fetal surgery. Once93 notes that “she’s world famous, has great bedside manners, and only a few can do what she does”.
It’s normal for patients to doubt a doctor’s abilities, and Addison always takes a few minutes to list her accomplishments. As such, viewers never doubt what she can do. She is also in the category “I can do what others can’t” because she is one of only two surgeons in the world who can separate fetal blood vessels and cure twin-to-twin blood transfusion syndrome. .
Izzie gets a lot of flak because of the LVAD wire incident and her history as a model, but she’s generally competent. Editor pacrat292 discusses how she “drilled holes in a guy’s head after not practicing medicine for 6 months and also opened up a guy’s bedside during his second week as an intern” .
Drilling burr holes in the skull from a ferry wreck with a regular drill certainly puts Izzie on the same level of improvisation as Owen. She also gets an Addison seal of approval, which means a lot. Additionally, Izzie is one of the few physicians with experience in a variety of fields, having worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist and cardiosurgeon before moving into oncology.
The residency program director is a fairly experienced surgeon. Editor betaich notes “Richard was on the award shortlist several times before the show” and that “he also taught Addison and Derek and many others”.
As one of Grey’s Anatomy doctors with the best teaching skills, Richard should be commended for empowering some of the best doctors on the show. His experience and tutelage aside, no one else will ever be able to top his eye-closed surgery feast. And it’s all down to muscle memory. Having performed over 10,000 surgeries, he knows where every muscle in the body is.
