In the revealing new book How to Save a Life: The Story of Grey’s AnatomyEntertainment Weekly editor Lynette Rice has spoken to numerous anonymous sources about Katherine Heigl’s sudden exit.
According to Initiated, a source suggested that Grey’s Anatomy Creator Shonda Rhimes felt she was to blame for Heigl’s departure from the show. Additionally, the person stated that Rhimes “felt like the star of the show and didn’t like actors becoming their own stars.”
At the time, many people believed Heigl had left medical drama to pursue other acting opportunities. However, the source suggested that was not the case. In fact, the book revealed that Heigl found it difficult to work with Rhimes and ultimately quit the show. âIt had nothing to do with his film career,â the source told Rice. “She wanted to go out because it was so hard working with Shonda.”
A former ABC Studios executive suggested Heigl could have stayed Grey’s Anatomy. But, the series couldn’t orchestrate “a great way to compromise the work schedule that didn’t negatively affect the crew or the cast.” The anonymous source added, “I think Steve McPherson and Shonda were so fed up with this, they just said, ‘Make him [Heigl] outside.'”

In the revealing book, Heigl regretted his past comments. The actor felt that she could “have handled the situation with more grace” and privately addressed the Grey’s Anatomy crew.
In addition, she spoke of the earlier remarks made on The Late Show with David Letterman. In 2009, Heigl appeared on the talk show and detailed the alleged poor working conditions in the medical drama.
The actor told the host, âOur first day back was Wednesday. It was – I’m going to keep saying this because I hope it embarrasses them – a 5-hour day, which I find cruel. While discussing the incident, Heigl told Rice that she felt “embarrassed” after the Letterman show.
