White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge Reveals How Seasick She Got While Filming Tanya’s Boat Emotional Praise

In the third episode of The White Lotus‘ first season, Jennifer CoolidgeCrazy socialite Tanya McQuoid took a sunset boat ride to say goodbye to her recently deceased mother by scattering her ashes at sea. (Other hotel guests Shane and Rachel were also on board, but not by choice.) Tanya started giving a heartfelt speech remembering her mother, but it turned into a bitter recap of all the terrible things her mother had done to her over the years. “And what’s weird,” Tanya exclaimed, “I miss my mother, even though she was a big bitch!

Here, Coolidge (one of our Dream Emmy nominees) tells TVLine about filming that pivotal scene…and how seasick she got.

THE SCRIPT | “Sure, [series creator] Mike White takes full credit for writing me this very funny monologue. He wrote 99.9%. I think there was this improvisation mixed in with that… I might have embellished what he wrote. I may have made it even more intense or something, and added some screaming and stuff… But he gets full credit for every word.

“It’s funny: I think I just went a little peekaboo for a while… Mike kind of taps into who you are, and he kind of opens a door for you, so if you want to risk saying something thing and to do something that he didn’t write, I felt like I had permission, so that’s kind of a gift he has.

SHOOTING DAY | “I kind of ruined the other cast’s fun because I repeatedly told Mike that I was seasick. I can’t even get on a kayak on a calm lake and not fall sick, you know? I can’t get on any whirlpool thing or a swing set in a park. So that was a bad combination.

“I told Mike we should do it on a set, but Mike isn’t following anybody’s directions. He’s like, ‘No, no.’ So we ended up doing it on this boat, and it was very rough seas, I got sick on the little boat on the way to the bigger boat, that’s how I get sick, I don’t know if anyone was really prepared for this. I said to everyone, “I’m not doing really well”, and everyone laughed. And then the bucket came out, and it stayed for all of us.

“It was a kind of optical illusion: the boat was not big. We were all very close to each other, less than a meter from each other. So everyone had to put up with me hoisting myself in a bucket between my lines. I’ll never forget that, because it’s such a personal thing, to get really sick in front of people. Everyone was quite speechless. I think Jake Lacy’s horror look wasn’t some kind of actor.

THE PRAISE | “I’ve met people like [Tanya], where they’ve had incredible feelings for someone in their life, and every time you get together with them, you just hear their grievances and their intense hatred, disgust, and unmet expectations of that person. And then this person, who has spent her life talking about it every time you see her, dies, and she can’t stop sobbing, and she can never pull herself together. And you realize that this person was everything.

“Tanya, she really had only one person who tormented her all her life as her best friend. It was her mother, who didn’t seem to be doing her a favor in this life, but who was ultimately the closest person to her. she.

MANAGEMENT | “[Mike White is] not only a great writer, he’s a brilliant director. It establishes a level of trust that’s kind of like a fortress, and so you kind of give in to it, and then all of a sudden, you kind of fly. I guess it’s just her confidence that you think isn’t crashing. He knows what he’s looking for in such a distinct and specific way that he’s not going to put fake moments on the show because it’s so important to him that it’s all real. In a weird way, Mike White is the scariest yet fulfilling experience.

Season 1 of The White Lotus is now streaming on HBO Max.
