After the custody battle with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), Callie moved to New York City with her then-girlfriend Penny (Samantha Sloyan). After the finale premiere on ABC, Sarah Ramirez released a public statement about their departure.
According to VarietyRamirez shared that they wanted to take some âfree timeâ to play Callie Torres. âI am deeply grateful to have spent the past 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now I’m taking a welcome time off, âthey said in a statement on Twitter. “It’s so amazing to work for Shonda, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!
Ramirez’s departure from the series surprised Grey’s Anatomy designer Shonda Rhimes. From Variety, Rhimes learned of its release days before. In a statement, she said, âDr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing in her underwear almost ten years ago, and I couldn’t be happier or more proud of her journey. Sara Ramirez’s performance inspired me and millions of fans every week. We wish him the best for his well-deserved leave. I will miss Callie dearly, but I’m excited about what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home in Shondaland.

After Callie left, many fans wondered if Callie would ever return to the Gray Sloan Memorial. Well, actor Sara Ramirez hasn’t fully closed the door on the idea.
In a 2017 interview with Weekly entertainmentRamirez said they were open to a return to the medical drama. “When Shonda [Rhimes] and I spoke for the last time, we agreed to continue the conversations, and she knows I’m ready to continue these conversations, âthey explained.
Either way, they don’t regret leaving the show. When asked if leaving was the right choice, they said, âAbsolutely. “

Since leaving the show in 2016, Ramirez has remained reserved and busy. According to CinemaBlend, they starred as a series regular in the CBS drama series Madam Secretary.
